External Insulation and Finishing Systems (EIFS)

EIFS or External Insulation and Finishing Systems, is the industry term for synthetic or acrylic stucco. Unlike traditional stucco, EIFS uses synthetic materials as opposed to cement. Generally, the first layer is a polystyrene foam board. That is followed by a fiberglass mesh and then a finishing coat is applied on top of that. Water resistant barriers can also be added to the layers.

These external insulation systems provide more protection and insulation than traditional stucco. It is also more flexible and noise resistant than traditional stucco finishes. With EIFS, often there is less cracking due to changing temperatures. While more expensive to apply, the benefits often make the extra investment worthwhile.
